Support the World Wide Fund for Nature
One of the reasons we work hard at our business is so that whenever we get the chance we can head out to sea, into the bush or simply spend time at home where we live in the countryside. We are privileged to live in a place where dolphins, seals and even whales frequent the coastline, where anyone has access to remote areas and the natural world is just across the paddock. But while enjoying these things we’ve realised just how fragile nature is and what a great effect human kind has on it.
You might think that as a retailer of cool electronic products for your home, Totally Wired might be an unlikely supporter for such a cause. But this is a personal issue for us. We live overlooking Warrington Beach, north of Dunedin which is also home to a handful of Hector’s Dolphins. Every time we venture out into the bay, we look for the Hectors. Every time we find them it is both a thrill and a relief that they are still there. The fact that we also choose to take our holidays in remote places like Fiordland and Stewart Island where, despite comparative isolation, it is a readily apparent that pressures from both commercial and recreational fishing are impacting on many species, further sharpens our resolve to do something.
So, with any purchase of more than NZ$ 600 from us, we’ll donate to WWF and you’ll get your very own Hector’s Dolphin. You can even give it a name. And just to remind you of what a good cause you are helping with, you’ll get a Hector’s Dolphin adoption pack, with certificate, poster and information sheets, and a little furry Hector’s Dolphin to take pride of place on your hi-fi or cinema system.
We’ve chosen WWF because they are a large organisation who can make a difference. They have a broad program while focusing on the areas that are of greatest concern and there is excellent research behind the work they do. We’ll then be helping the earth and it’s creatures survive making the world a better place to live. As a customer of Totally Wired you will be instrumental in achieving this worthy goal.
We encourage you to visit the WWF Websites and learn about their principles and activities. In New Zealand www.wwf.org.nz or the WWF global site at www.panda.org.
When we visited Dusky Sound in Fiordland in 1998 we became acutely aware of how much damage has been done to New Zealand’s environment – While the photos depict idyllic scenes, they hide the almost total annihilation of native bird life in the area caused by introduced weasels, stoats and ferrets. Despite being in the heart of a National Park there is virtually no protection for any species below the waterline. Isolation is proving to be no safeguard as uncontrolled overfishing threatens what should be a heritage area for all to enjoy in the future. For more information on how to see Fiordland, visit our friends at Fiordland Wilderness Experiance.
We hope you consider joining us in supporting WWF – and hope that you may also get to enjoy some of New Zealand’s wilderness areas as much as we do.
