The P3 headphones are a foldable compact design for people who want easily transportable headphones that still achieve excellent sound quality. Despite their long history renowned English speaker company B&W, have only in recent years added headphones to their range – and of course did it with style. So what an introduction they made with the P5 headphones late 2010. The accolades and 5 star reviews since received confirm that their headphone design meets both the performance and wearability standards of discerning headphone users. The smaller P3 admirably followed.

The P5 came from a desire to provide listeners who are traveling, or have a need for listening at home without disturbing others, with a viable option. The B&Ws solve this with a closed 'noise isolation' design. We’re also fond of the lower priced Tivolis and for in–ear options the NuForce earphones.

Sound Enhancements

B&W took on the challenge of getting the best performance they could from relatively small sized headphones. The P3 drive unit technology is based around uniform airflow – an issue with closed headphones that can lead to distortion. B&W therefore opted to put the terminals at the back of the headphones behind the magnet. Magnets and dampening technology found in high end B&W speakers further add to the linear and natural sound that the P3s produce. Certainly in our listening 'natural sound' is an apt description of the P3 performance. The sound is easy to live with. The fabric on the pads allows for maximum transparency and the well sealed pads contribute to noise isolation as well as controlled bass.

Comfort and Durability

The new P3 headphones are very gucci with a luxe feel. Yet they are sturdy. Headphones often have a feeling of fragility. When moving around with headphones you want to feel confident in the build quality. The P3s have a lovely balance between strength and flexibility. The fold away design helps with the portable function as well as safety. Add to this the hard shell clam case they come with so in your hand bag, carry on or in your pocket they are well protected. Comfort of course is important for headphones. The P3s are very tactile. The headband is nicely 'spingy' and the pads are made from memory foam that moulds to your ears – also enhancing the sound. The P3s come set up to work with iPhone but are broadly compatible so can work all mobile phones and MP3 players via an easy cable swap.

Of the two B&W offerings the P5 is still the better choice if sound quality is your priority especially for home listening. If portability however, is of greater importance the P3s are for you.
