New Zealand may be a small country, best known for agriculture and sport, but we are also famous for a ‘can do’ attitude. Every so often, when we look at many products, imported from around the world with all the attendant layers of cost, someone will think – ‘I could do that better’. And in a typically New Zealand fashion, does so.
So over the last 30 years, we have enjoyed a significant number of New Zealand designed and made audio products and brands. There is a heritage and common thread amongst these products. A keen desire to produce better value for money, deliver more performance and better reliability than imported counterparts as lead to amplifier designers such as Perreaux becoming world famous. It’s around 30 years since Peter Perreaux walked into one of the best New York audio stores, raised his 200 watt power amp and promptly dropped it on the floor. Then picked it up, plugged it in and proceeded to show everyone what great sound was all about.
Not long after this, we sold our first Perreaux amplifier here and have continued to do so ever since. Over the same period, we have been involved with Plinius, McLaren, Craft, Mega and Roberts amplifiers – all significant and worthy products in their time.
Today, we enjoy the new Perreaux amplifiers – their range has broadened with more compact affordable models such as the new Silhouette series, seriously high power, high end offerings with as much as 750 watts per channel and matching control and source components.
There is also a significant history of loudspeaker design and manufacture in New Zealand. Chris Ball produces Image loudspeakers and has continually been refining his designs for a good 25 years. The constants have been furniture quality hand made cabinets, and the selection of the best overseas sourced drive units, to deliver loudspeakers that perform in New Zealand homes. There is a clear ‘value for money factor’ with each model, the desire to work well with all tastes in music and the understanding that long-term reliability is more than just a given, since we are only ever a phone call away.
Slinkylinks are the young guns in the NZ made story. With both real high end aspirations and the ability to think outside the square, Slinkylinks have produced remarkable interconnect and speaker cables. Hand made using only pure silver in a unique yet cost effective configuration, they take on the very best in terms of performance.
