Sonus faber Concert Domus range
The Concert Domus series give you the essence of Sonus faber at easily affordable prices. The Concertino when combined with its dedicated stands is capable of taking on any conventional speaker system up to around NZ$ 5,000. This includes many of our favorite floor-standers. There is something undeniably special about the Sonus faber sound, and once you have hear it, there may be no going back. Sonus faber have just released two new ranges ‘Toy’ and ‘Luito’ replacing the Domus range. We're on the tail end of Domus stock so now is the time to get in should you wish to be matching what you may already have.

But there are plenty of other good reasons to seriously consider the Sonus faber Concert Domus speakers. They look great – the trademark woodwork is there, with solid teak side panels and leather wrapped front, top and rear panels – this isn’t just cosmetic as the mix of materials makes a positive contribution to the sound quality. They are easy to drive, so you don’t have to spend a fortune on matching equipment. In fact they make even low cost electronics sound far better than they have a right to. At the other end of the scale, we’ve been selling Sonus faber for years and are have always been impressed with their reliability and power handling – it is very rare to ever have a problem and we have heard all of the models running at levels that would get the noise control officer quite excited.
Sonus faber 'Gravis' subwoofer was $3,700, one only NZ$ 2,500 New
This may be the last chance that anyone who owns Sonus faber speakers from the 'Concert Domus' range to get hold of a matching subwoofer. But for any system Gravis is one of the best sounding subwoofers we have ever heard. Musical may not be a word you’d associate with subwoofers but we can assure you the Gravis stands out as being refined and subtle when others are rough and ready. Which is not to say it doesn’t fulfill it’s obligations in terms of providing deep low rich bass. This it does, but in a way that adds to the qualities of a system rather than detracts. Teak finish. In fact, the pairing of the little Conertino Domus with the Gravis creates a full range system that goes places a large pair of floor standers never can – you get the finesse and transparency of a small speaker but extension and control that only an active system can even start to emulate.
Concertino Domus. NZ$ 3,200 the pair in teak - including stands
This really is the nicest little speaker you could hope to own – and very much one of our all time favorites. The Concertino makes just about any system or type of music sound better, casting a warm glow and easy going flow to each track. The wonderful midrange qualities that you hear about with Sonus faber are clearly there, with vocals especially being much more realistic and intelligible when compared to other speakers. You don’t need an expensive system to hear this – when paired with the entry level Rotel 06 series, you’ll be able to enjoy a sound that much bigger, more costly and complicated setups fail to transmit. As much as we enjoy the other brands of speakers we sell – the NZ made Image Studio Reference and new Quad 11L2 spring to mind, the Concertinos are demonstrably better and well worth the small difference in price. These are actually the third version of the Concertino and there has been substantive progress made, greatly improving the extension and dynamics of this model.
As a small speaker, it excels at producing a wide and clearly defined soundstage, unwinding recordings and placing individual instruments and voices in your room. To do this, you simply have to follow the instructions in the well written and illustrated manual, placing the speakers on appropriate stands – ideally their own and positioning them well out from the wall. You can still sit the Concertinos on shelves and they’ll sound very good – but play the game by the rules and you’ll really reap the rewards.
Don’t get hung up on limitations you might think these speakers might have until you have listened to them – we find that it is a very rare demonstration that someone walks away from without being seriously impressed by the Concertinos. And if you are hearing them in the context of a more ambitious system, you may well wonder why you’d spend more on a speaker (of course we do have the answer to that, and it is called the Auditor M.)
